A review of a Cambridgeshire Wedding Photographer's Year....sort of....

There are going to be a million “review” blogs and posts and so on placed all over social media at the moment. Understandably. It’s nice to stand back and reflect on the year as a business as a Cambridgeshire Wedding Photographer, it’s successes, its failures, its ups and downs and see where we are at and let people know. I get it. But I don’t want to do that this time. I have done a fair few over the years and they can be both very enlightening and self defeating for so many different reasons. You see how your style changes from being a pretty traditional wedding photographer to finding your feet and seeing yourself as more of an alternative, fun, different wedding photographer. Especially in Cambridgeshire as there are so many awesome Cambridgeshire based wedding photographers and from the surrounding areas, we all need to make ourselves stand out that little bit more. A review can help that. It can also hinder it.

So here is my “review of the year” in a nutshell…..

Blimey! (with big wide emoji eyes and a shocked look on the face…)

There you go. Sums up my look back on my year perfectly. From a total re-brand (like the new logo? Not so new now but I love it!), to seeing the fruits of all the info I have taken on and implemented in a massively steep second learning curve this year. But boy was it worth it! From worrying about the re-brand and whether it will be received well to actually winning an award at the end of the year, it’s been a whirlwind! And yeah, I know, you have heard this before (a lot!) from me, but I won an award. Highly Commended Photographer from the Four Counties Wedding Awards! Still basking in that one! Spin spin spin! Haven’t stopped! And it’s only going to get madder and by that I mean…..BETTER! So many things to look forward to. Expansion of services in the business (watch this space), more weddings, collaborations that will hopefully bring more exposure, new venues (like the lovely Orchard at Chesfield I have just been added to their trusted supplier list)…..I cannot wait to take a massive chunk out of this and start chewing it all! Being a Cambridgeshire Wedding Photographer hasn’t been this exciting since…..last year!

So lets crack on! I am still taking bookings for 2019 with dates filling up and I am now also taking 2020 bookings, of which I have a few already, so get in touch if you want to chat to an AWARD WINNING (ahhhh it’s not getting any less fun to say it yet…) Cambridgeshire based wedding UK wedding photographer. In the meantime, here are a few off-beat reminders as to this year, not all wedding related, just stuff that has made 2018 a special one and will hopefully lead on to making 2019 a really special one for this particular Cambridgeshire wedding photographer! Totally irreverent and irrelevant if you like, but it’s a look at all the stuff you don’t usually see from me and puts a bit of a smile on the face. If you want to see my usual stuff, head over to the rest of the site and have a look. It’s all there! If you got engaged over the Christmas and New Year period, CONGRATULATIONS!!! Why don’t you get in touch. Would love to have a chinwag about your plans and what you have in mind and let’s see if I can help you along the way!

This was a lovely familiarisation meeting at the gorgeous Chicheley Hall arranged by the indomitable Tracy Butterfield of Appleby Events (bottom left in black). She’s an incredible person, juggling so much and yet being an amazing hive of contacts, information and just generally being a wonderful person all round.

These two reprobates have become two very good friends of mine as well as being vast mines of information and support for me over the past year. They are also the absolute best at what they do. Dom and Vanessa of multi award winning Rocks and Frocks wedding and event planners and The Letter Hire People , purveyors of high end bespoke event light up lettering. I have a lot to thank these guys for.

I do family shoots as well and this was both fun and hard work. These two are like a whirlwind, trying to get them to sit or stay still was night on impossible, so this is what we got…..just loads of kids being kids. There are always ways and means!

Suzy Randell of award winning Flowers by Suzanne between shots and having a giggle while I was setting up the shot on her rebranding photo shoot. Watch this space for an expansion of similar services…

This was pure indulgence. A lovely sponsored freebie from that guy above, Dom Harness of Rocks and Frocks Wedding and evening planners. Some of the perks of the hard work do pay off sometimes. I was in my element this day. A grid walk and pit lane access to the Snetterton round of the Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship . What a superb day and a big thanks to Dom for remembering I was a complete car nut!

An off guard moment for Teresa Brooks of Teresa Brooks Coaching . It’s fab when a client and a photographer hit it off and have a great rapport. She explained what she wanted, I understood and then delivered. And we had a heck of a lot of fun along the way!

These loons are getting married this year. This was part of their pre-wedding shoot while we were figuring out what might or might not be a good shot in the ruins of Bury St Edmunds Abbey Gardens . Needless to say they took it upon themselves to enact something musical, although to this day, I still don’t know what it is!

In some ways, this needs no explanation….mainly as I don’t have one! Another totally fab pre-wedding shoot, this time in Epping Forest

Hero pose!!! The lead singer of the rather incredible wedding and event band, The Epics and one of the best weddings I shot all year, Myles and Sarah’s wedding at the totally incredible Devonshire Terrace in the City of London. These guys blew the roof off the place. One of the best bands I have seen at a wedding!

When you do a pre-wedding shoot and find that your couple are pro level dancers…….yeah…..this was a lot of fun! Shot at Grantchester Meadows in Cambridge

I get invited to do a few things to help people out but also help me too. A great way of doing this is to be “official” photographers for open days, events etc, where not only do you take photos to promote the company hiring you, but you also get to tout your own services too. Needless to say, you can see these things can be a heck of a lot of fun! Here we have Hall & Co Event Planning , One Part Love Bakery (for who I can personally vouch for as she made my wife’s 40th birthday and it was epically delicious!), Mirabella Weddings and Feather and Ferns Florists having a moment of silliness downtime in a tent displayed by Bumble Bell Tents at the open day for the rather excellent Cambridge Tent Company . It was a bit cold, a bit miserable, but that didn’t stop the fun and laughter and the high spirits on what was a really successful day for the companies involved and showing off their wares and services.

An in between moment for the “model” of a shoot for Cosmetier , a company specialising in non-surgical facial aesthetics. This lady was brought in as she was a regular client of the company and was chosen as she was a great example of the work the company do, the natural feel and look of the treatments and she would be now the face of the new re-brand of the company, the brochures and a few other things. She was an absolute star, taking guidance superbly well, a total natural but was always smiling and laughing. Which is how I love all my shoots to go!

And finally…….My daughters 7th birthday party. I am a Dad of two absolutely adorable loony lights of my life (above and below)…. Doesn’t matter the event, I am usually dragged in to take photos….I don’t mind. Especially when its this fun…..but was so so exhausting. 7 kids all under 7 for two hours………yeah. I’m done!
